The Adobe

Last time Shawna’s parents came out from Colorado her father and I were standing out in the field looking at the fifth and final foundation. “An Adobe would be cool,” he said. He sketched it out and left me with a lot of thinking to do. We slightly adapted the original drawing and came up with a plan. My dad and I started by going over to Lussiers sawmill and purchased the rough hemlock beams that would become the frame. It was a two week process to plane, sand, route, and stain the beams. Moving them around was fun as well. My dad put in a lot of hard work on this project all the way from beginning to end.
The beams went up and the frame was built around them. The building was then sheathed in foam, scratch coated and covered in stucco to look like Clint Eastwood himself was dealin’ stud inside. The roof was interesting as it is made of spray foam. Slap a couple coats of paint over it and its done. The Adobe is all earth tones and cedar inside. We found the old metal cabinets in a salvage store and the Mexican tiles on craigslist. This incredible floor was the brainchild of our electrician who told us to “just burn it”. That we did. With propane torches, steel wool and poly some “construction grade” hemlock became a very unique product. We pulled off a lot of stuff that people deemed to be “crazy”. In the end, I think we created something my father in law will be proud of next time he stays here. This may be the only one East of the Mississippi.
